Eesmärk

The course encourages students to think critically about what means communication to persons affected by dementia. The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills in understanding of how to communicate with people with dementia.

Õppiväljundid

After the course, students will be able to:
1. show understanding of persons with dementia conditions and how they adversely affect the intellectual capacity, particularly their communication skills;
2. demonstrate understanding of the persons’ needs;
3. choose the most effective communication techniques with person with dementia.

Teemad

Dementia: definition, forms, types, etiology, symptoms
Typical stadiums of dementia, decline of cognitive abilities (Four „A“s)
Assessment of functions (instruments, scales etc)
Associated risks: trauma, impaired nutrition/ hydration, isolation, neglect.
Associated syndroms: pain, depression, delirium.
Reality Orientation and its techniques (ROT)
Reminiscence Therapy and its techniques.
Validation and its techniques
Stimulation techniques and creative therapies

Iseseisev töö

3 tutor-marked assignments in course environment and short final reflection.

Hindamiskriteeriumid

Students will be expected to submit their 3 tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) online through the THCC Moodle system.
